Post Apocalypse Review.

Boom. We're still Here. No end of the world, no WWIII. Christmas was wonderful, enjoyed he time home with my Family. Had a big turkey fry with friends, couldn't have asked for a better day. Training has been going really well. Didnt record last week cuz well..life happens. Got busy with Holiday shopping and the usual BS that comes along with.

Been holding really strict to CARBNITE. Timed Christmas dinner with Carbnite and it was marvelous ate ggod food and beverage to my hearts content.


Deloading this week. Trained DeadLifts today but nothing Devastating. 135 X 5, 225 X 5 and 315 X 5. Nothing Crazy. Did three sets of ABz and 5 sets of 10 GHR situps. Funny thing about those, I researched those on youtube and discovered I was doing them completely wrong. Derp right? Did them correctly tonight and fuck me running my legs are smoked. Good stuff. So much for deloading....


Theres a lot going on in the world rght now. The mass shooting in CT broke my heart. Its easy to say "ya we need moire guns in school' but the truth is if you're  a parent you dont want your kids raised in that type of environment. I am all for educating and teaching kids about Firearms across the board. The more educated they are the less likely an accident will happen involving a gun. Endeth the rant.


Looking forward to some serious progress composition wise- I think I have this Carbnite thing licked. I just have to be careful of trying to shortcut shit and load up on shitty calories. As long as I manage to keep my back healthy and free of pain I'm looking forward to some serious PR's this spring. I think Ive been programming right on the nose. Usually my last set w/ 5-3-1, I'm knockin down reps in the 12-15 range with a few left in the tank. Next week when I program I'm not going to MAX out. I usually find myself doing that out of pure curiosity after every cycle. Not this time. At the moment I dont plan on Maxing until the spring. If I had to have a "resolution" for the new year it would be not to Max until spring. Just keep running cycles and upping the weights by increments.

I have decided I want to do a meet. That's right a Powerlifting meet. I know Ive said before I have no desire to be a powerlifter but something Paul Carter from Lift-Run-Bang said resonated with me. "Maxes dont count unless its at a meet" I'm sure I paraphrased the fuck out of that but the point is I would like to get my name and numbers into the books, somehow some way. If I dig it cool, If not- fuck it back to the gym it is. We'll see. My buddy Adam is doing a Body Building competition in Waikiki this summer, If there is a correlating Powerlifting meet around the same time I would love to do it. More to follow on that. Combined with the fact I had my back thing last week. Not wise. I walked away feeling worse. No training today, went XMAS shopping for the little one. Gonna pick it up tomorrow. Start leave next week and that- as Ron Burgundy would say- "The Balls".

Recovery.

Took it Light this week. WAY light. By ligh I mean I havent trained since last mon. I feel pretty good. Lower Back is a bit twitchy but I think thats residual. I basically sat down and programmed this week based off what I should have done last week. Easy enough. We'll see how it goes.


The heavy bag is up at Martinez- I'm kinda pumped about that. The feeling of mobility and athleticism I get from doing Wendler's Bodyweight template is nice. Im going to add on that with some boxing thrown in fro good measure. Nothing heavy- just bag work, jump rope and speedbag thrown in for fun. Speaking of Boxing Congrats are in order for Juan Marquez for his 6h round KO over Manny Pacquiao. It is painfully obvious who wanted it more and settles ALOT of questions.


Thats all for tonight. Watched Dark Knight Rises last night- I NEVER get tired of watching that movie.

It is absolitely safe to say I feel like Hammered Dog shit. I got my training in this morning at about 0530. Went very well. However.....

                                                          ..And now for the rest of the story......

Had my RFA today. Not sure what it stands for but in a nutshell the Docs burned out some sour nerves that were being pesky in my Lower back. Bad news is it's temporary. No way in hell i'm getting this done again unless i'm out. Everything from my hips down feels FUCKED..SORE. Best description is that I tried to do Max Good Mornings for singles ALL DAY. It doesn't help that I squatted yesterday so my legs feel extra special.

Anyway enough of this Panty-waist Bullshit. Ill be fine. It's life. Shit Happens. This week may be iffy But next week Ill be back to Training. This week may be "Fun" work. Cables, Dips, Chins, Curls for the Girls..We'll see. For those that folow this Blog. Thank you. I do this for me first, but its cool that someone (all 5 of you ) care enough to read each week.

Simple day. I usually don't train on Sundays. No religious reasons its just usually one complete down day training wise. Had a Migraine that could kill a small child yesterday, so I came home from Admin took off my boots and crashed for about 3 hrs. IT SUCKED! But ya that was my weekend. I have minor surgery tomorrow morning. The Docs at tripler are going to burn out some nerves in my lower back so I dont know how Im going to respond to that training wise. I do know Im going to probably take it light this week. It's all going to depend on how I feel.

I do know Im going to rip out a stellar Bench training day tomorrow morning. I'm going to 8th TSC Gym in the AM prior, so if my back is fucked after this at least I got one last good session lol. Til next time.

Good sesh ( I hate that fucking word) Quick and to the point. The little one had to make a trip to the library so that took precedence this afternoon.  Got in got my numbers, knocked out some GHR situps and some walks and thats it. I bumped the weight up on the hex bar, put on 20lbs to lean on it a bit. Had my first carbnite lastnight and it was glorious. Loved it. and surprisingly I woke up the next morning not feeling like dogshit or bloated. Pretty cool. weighed in Wed at 265. Lost five lbs and another inch off my waist from last month. I just started carbnite so its too soon to tell what kind of results are happening. I personally have noted a much thinner less bloated appearance. I dig it. I hope it carries over next month.

Inspiration.

Today in the Gym I bore witness to one of the most inspiring things Ive ever seen. There was a gentleman who had prosthesis on his right leg below the Knee. I can put two and two together so that and the Wounded Warrior Tshirt he had on he was/is a green suiter who was injured downrange. I finished the main portion of my training and found myself sneaking glances at what he was doing. This guy was Squatting. He didn't have 5 plates on each side, he wasnt following any sort of protocol (I think) but he was gettin shit done. After that he moved on to deadlifts- again, nothing herculean BUT HE WAS GETTING HIS. His form and effort put  ALOT of people in that gym today to fucking shame.

I wanted to shake his hand and offer any help but what I also noticed is that he had that gleam in his eye. The one that says 'dont fuck with me'. Message received brother. I thought about my 'long day' my 'shortcomings' my bullshit. And that's all it is.

However 'Hardcore' you think you are or your (gag) 'beast mode' Theres a guy like the one I saw with a permanent INJURY who is working twice as hard with less to work with. Get over yourself. Another good training day! Def got a little cocky with my numbers this week and the King of Kings Mr Squat humbled my ass. I still chalk it up as a W' for the day. Ive been dropping carbs like its out of style so a drop in strength is expected. I was definately hoping to be north of 350 today but not so much. We'll get there. Gonna program some numbers tomorrow night and lay it out for the upcoming month and see what we can do. Until then...

Another excellent day of training. Today is my 3rd day of carbnite and to paraphrase Paul Carter I want to punch babies. 30 grams of carbs a day is no fucking joke. Its absolutely nuts because despite feeling tired and sluggish going to the gym, once I get to training Ive got plenty of energy on tap. I felt well "supercharged"  so to say. In keeping with monday I decided to max out today. I was extremely nervous due to issues with my back. Bench press is one thing but hinging the spine is another. I made it easily to 350 for one. I definately had another 5, which means I had another 3 for 385 and I KNOW for DAMN SURE I could pull 405. Needless to say it was a good day.

No conditioning today. Getting up at 0400 then maxing in the afternoon has got me a little burnt. My caffeine intake has been through the roof just to keep hunger pangs at bay. FAT IRISH COFFEE. That's all I have to say.

Excellent training day. I was borderline napping by the time I got to the gym today but It was probably the best day I've had in awhile. I decided this past sunday I was going to max the lifts this week. My L4 hasnt been acting up too incredibly bad since the nerve blockers and quite frankly I wanted to see where the fuck I was at.

I sandbagged the hell out of 275 though. I had another 5 in the tank but I didn't want to push my luck. I wasnt counting on 275 at all today and if I had another 5 in the tank for 275 that means I had at least 3-4 for 285 and I know beyond the shadow of a doubt I could have put up 315. That makes THIS GUY ecstatic!




Now don't get me wrong. I know 275 is laughable at best however given the extreme pain ive been dealing with for the last couple months its a huge jump for me and the fact that I KNOW I had way more left in the tank makes me very confident. Im going to stick with  275 as the training max for the next four weeks. Not gonna get greedy. Chins coming along even better. the Mon/Fri split works phenomenally. Shoulder pain is a thing of the past.


Finally pulled the trigger on Kiefer's Carbnite. Bought the ebook and did the proper thing and printed it off on GOV printer paper.Its gonna be interesting for sure. I started "Re-orientation week" today  30 grams  a day of Carbs SUCKS! felt light headed today. Gonna stick it out. Tired of being a fatty. It seems to have done wonders for MARK BELL @ supertraining and PAUL CARTER at LiftRunBang. Both are HUGE dudes and both have seen (from my point of view) great results. All I know is come next WED...It.Is.ON like fuckin Gangbusters..

I've tried variations on it and all it does is murder my fucking spine. I know ALOT of people speak highly of it. Oh well. I added another set to the other exercises to make up for it. Good training today. Only had a shake for lunch and I felt pretty amped up during training. Had a chic today cutoff my Ab routine. I was going back and forth between hanging leg raises and weighted situps. I did my set of situps and head back to the squat rack to do another set of leg raises..sure as shit she just pulls down my arm straps and starts loading the bar. I walk up with a quizzical look and she says "oh im sorry I was going to squat" Well NO SHIT....I grabbed my shit and left. If you ever have the chance to train at Martinez Gym on Schofield Barracks...Don't. I silently wished that the broad who cut me off would snap her ankles squatting in Nike Shox...Is that wrong? Or was I wrong for doing leg raises in the squat rack in the first place? The great ponderances...




Between the rudie-poos and the "Beast Mode" Bro's I'm about fed the fuck up with my Local gym. Let's not forget the 40 something dude who "trains" with the crossfit women in the evening. The ONLY dude. It wouldn't be so creepy if the girls who train there are barely out of their teens. I take offense to this type of shit because I do indeed have a teenage daughter and If I found out there was a creepy 40ish something dude watching her do burpees I'd be mighty fucking pissed. Just me. I am 30, I promise that I will have my own gym before I am 35. A small part of me doesnt mind going to a public gym, the staff at Martinez are actually pretty legit- they usually "forget" locker fees and such. They dont mind the chalk dust I leave at the squat rack and keep the equipment in good shape. I dont mind being around people who are motivated- regardless of what they train for, as long as that training has a purpose. It's the 'Bro's", the 'Hoes' and 'thousand yard stare' wannabe badasses that make me sick. What can you do right?

Solid day. Backed off on the intensity a bit. I did some ridiculously light bench today. From what I gathered when you deload you're supposed to get your weights in and THATS' IT. I understand this but if I ever get to the day where a couple of sets of chins, push ups and ab work fuck up my deload? Ill quit this altogether. Not trying to sound like a badass but that's just how it is. I will however keep it bodyweight this week, no curls, good mornings or anything else.

The Basketball courts are closed til Dec so no Heavy bag work. That's a bummer. I dont fight competitively anymore but I love training on the bag. That and the speed bag Excellent conditioning tools. Since that's the case tomorrow I'm gonna get some time in on the rowing machine, Knockout some Dips and some jumprope. We'll see how it goes.

Veterans Day.

I wanted to post this earlier in the weekend but my trusty laptop finally called it quits. This is basically a Thank You to all of my Brothers and Sisters in Arms. To a lot of people- Civilians mostly, Veterans Day weekend is just another long weekend to go out and drink, party and have fun. To be honest it was like that for me for a long time. It stopped being that for me when I started losing Friends of mine to the War. The old saying "It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt" That's exactly what it was. Suddenly it became crystal clear- Friends of mine that I had deployed with, partied with and been close to were gone. I would never share a laugh or a beer with them ever again. Ever.


It was also around this time I stopped watching War Movies. Anyone who knows me knows that I used to LOVE war movies. Now not so much. I cant pinpoint an exact point or specific moment..I just stopped  watching them. This isn't some 'woe is me' moment. It's just the truth.


I brought up a subject on FB which I'd like to clarify. Some people think I am against VETS getting discounted or free meals at reataurants over the weekend. I'm not. I have no problem with it. My problem is that there are an over abundance of Veterans who are Homeless, Jobless and Healthcare-less and to me that is absolutely unacceptable. I would rather there be a push to get Vets the help they need and get them jobs rather than free coupons to Denny's or Chili's. This is simply my opinion, I'm not asking anyone to start a movement or whatnot. I simply choose NOT to accept any discounts or Free Meals.



Thanking a Veteran shouldn't be a one weekend a year thing. If you see a Man or a Woman wearing a Black Ball cap that says WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Afghanistan or Iraq Veteran. Shake their hand or say Thank you. It's not hard..




Some of these Gentleman pictured are personal heroes of mine. Without bragging, I read about the 101'st and Band of Brothers before it was cool. I read Black Hawk Down my Senior year in High School, it was and is to this day one of my favorite Books. Master Sergeant Gary Gordon and SFC Randy Shugart are both unwavering symbols of Bravery. For their Bravery in Somalia they were the first Medal of Honor recipients since the Vietnam war.

Above pictured is Lt Mike Murphy. A Navy SEAL who who gave the ultimate sacrifice to make sure his men were taken care of. Already shot multiple times Lt Murphy scrambled to he top of an exposed ridge to call in Air support for his men knowing he would be killed. For his actions he also was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

The recurring theme amongst the Soldiers and SEAL's I pictured is not that they're Badasses (Which they are) or that they squatted a thousand pounds, ran marathons etc. In face of danger they all DID WHAT HAD TO BE DONE. In both cases both Lt Murphy and Sergeants Shugart and Gordon knew that they were putting themselves at grave risk, but they did it for the man next to them. Their Battle buddy/Swim buddy respectively. They put their comrades BEFORE themselves. Selfless Service.

In closing I wanted to say Thank you to all those with whom Iv'e had the pleasure of serving with. Those Iv'e learned from and the lessons learned. To those who are no longer with us and standing he eternal watch.

Some of the incidents I cited above are only a small examples of some of the heroic deeds of Soldiers Sailors and Marines over the last 50 years. There is not enough time in the day to recount all of them so I wont even try. Bottom Line is whenever you think you've had a hard day please remember that there is someone who is far away from home putting their ass on the line for you and I. It could always be much worse. This time last year I was freezing my ass off in the Arghandab valley in Afghanistan. There are still Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Air Force deployed in Harms way. Conducted training a bit different Sat. Morning. Lately the Press has been handing me my ass. Every Saturday for like the last month. I took a different approach to this yesterday. Instead of doing the prescribed three sets, I started w 135 and did sets of 5 until motherfucking failure..Every set I added 5 lbs. It went like this.

De loading next week...Deloading off of ridiculously light weights but I'm sticking with it. Til next time. Stay thirsty.

Good Day today. Felt completely hydrated and motivated. Ab routine kicked my balls. Had to lower the dosage on the DB side bends. Felt like 95's were pulling my rib muscles off. Backed of to 65's. Everything else felt right. Wasn't as much of a struggle w the Ab wheel. Going to de-load next week. The numbers I've been moving have been light as shit so it's hard to justify "de-loading" but I'm going to go with it. Still playing around with assistance schemes and finding what works for what day. Trying to keep it simple, no more than three TOTAL excercises excluding conditioning.

Bodyweight template seems to be working fine. I enjoy feeling limber and honestly its refreshing Improving on chins and dips which I've never been strong at honestly. Overall good day.

Recoup.

Greetings. I feel 110 % better today. Whatever nastiness was clinging to me this past week finally peaked yesterday and I think left me today. Had a massive protein shake for breakfast this morning- felt kinda iffy. Was literally starving by Lunch. Came home and murdered half of my wife's Chicken sandwich from Dominoes and followed that up with a huge Island marinated chicken breast and some white rice. Slathered it in Sriracha sauce and sealed the deal.

Not sure if I want to pull the trigger on Kiefer's Carb-Backloading program yet. It seems 100% opposite of everything I've learned up to this point that IS working. Not saying he's full of shit by any means it seems that it has best results on Big guys who train in the evening. We shall see. No training today. Eating and Hydrating. And in case no one is paying attention-

Many of you people have allowed yourselves to be so ingrained in your own head that this was a “Fight to the death” per se. It’s not. Is it important? Absolutely. I wont bore anyone or opine on how I feel about politics these days. That's for another post and another day. Quite Frankly I'm too fucking tired. I will offer this however for you the reader.

Good Training today. Felt tired as shit by the time I hit the Gym. Did a set of Push ups and teh ABZ circuit BEFORE I hit the bench. Thought I would've regretted that but I actually felt warmed up for the set. Bench went well, Form is tight. Working on "setting" before liftoff. Grip-eyes on bar- feet planted-arch the back. LIFT. The setup takes longer than the actual lift.

'teh ABZ' circuit is legit. Definitely going to stick with it. Throw it in every other day. Add more sets. Overall good day but I'm going to try for more rest tonight. Good Night and good luck.

Nothing planned today. May go for a walk. Had a great time at my friend John's house last night. Watched the LSU / Alabama game, drank whiskey, ate Hamburgers and grilled tomatoes and drank whiskey. Not by any means a College Ball fan, I couldn't tell you any of the rankings, rivalries etc. But Alabama came back in the last minute and 30 of the game and took it home. The look on LSU fans face was priceless. Good times.

Solid training day. Despite the extreme "lightness" of the squats I concentrated on form big time. Tightness from the bottom. Keeping my eyes focused etc. Box squats were no shit. First time I ever tried them. Definitely different from normal squats. Dave Tate made a remark that Box squats show you how to "sit back" properly during the squat and he was dead on the money. These are definitely going to be a staple in training from now on.

 Still laying back on Dips and chins. Going to spread them out more during the week example:

Chins- Mon &Fri

Dips- Tues & Thurs.

We'll see how that goes. Farmers walks smoked me yesterday. No straps today. Only got 5 trips. I'm almost 100% positive its due to the inclusion of box squats. Legs were trashed. Good day.

Up note diet was much better today. Even went out for Thai food last night with friends and didn't come home a bloated mess. Kept it real with Som tum, chicken skewers, and Spicy Lemon sauce Calmari and crab. I dont know the caloric content but I skimped on the white rice. Ate the whole damn thing and wasnt even close to full. Also had a (singular) Dos Equis Amber. Good times.

- Back feels strong. 2nd week still VERY light VERY, VERY light. Four sets of 25 pushups spread in between lifts. Chins getting stronger, took 4 days off training altogether. Quarters the whole nine. Nerve blockers are doing their voodoo, gonna get it in while I can. Fuck you L-4!

- Bought a set of straps today. Used them for shrugs and then realized I'm a fucking idiot for using straps for 135 lbs on the Hex bar. WAY heavier next time. Also used them for the Farmers walks...Don't know if I'm going to do that again. I bought the straps to help with grip fatigue DURING my set of farmers walks. The straps made it too easy. Instead of of pushing for a max set of trips I'm just going to go for broke until I cant grip the damn bar anymore and completely spent. That's the point right? Overall good training day.

- On a fucking bum note- My diet has been SHIT this week. Being laid up on quarters certainly didn't help. As gay as it may seem I track my diet on myfitnesspal.com

   I try to maintain a caloric deficit day in day out, keep protein at body weight plus and carbs at or around less than a hundred grams a day,  fats falling in behind that. Needless to say I fucked the dog on that today. This week I've been right on the borderline, today





   It also doesn't help that my brand fucking new blender that had a specific 'smoothie' button that whipped up a badass protein shake in about 20 seconds FUCKING DIED. Unacceptable. Ive recently also discovered that like a Meth head I start to get VERY nervous when my fridge and pantry of awesomeness starts to dwindle. By awesomeness I mean the staples- Protein, Peanut butter (crunchy you assholes), steel cut oats, ground beef / turkey, egg whites- you get the fucking picture. When said items become depleted I freak the fuck out and eat stupid shit I shouldn't. Pathetic right? Someone call Dr Drew.


  The take away? The more I surround myself with healthy shit- the less likely I am to fuck up. And I am pathetic for succumbing to straps. I'm going to inhale my daughters Halloween candy along with my feelings. Have a great day!

It bothers me to no end this trend Im seeing of Drill Sergeants, or friends of Drill Sergeants posting pics of the 'goings on' I guess of what goes on in Basic, ie: Posing next to a group of privates in the front leaning rest and posting that as your profile pic, or something totally unbecoming of a DS. Maybe im looking too far into it, all I know is the Drill Seargeants I HAD would never in a million years do that. Unprofessional Gents..Un-fucking -Professional.
Maybe someone is thinking "You're looking too far into it" I call bullshit. To me in my mind, aside from shit-ass movies that usually miss the mark anyway, or documentaries or what have you, that type of thing is sacred. Its to be seen by the Private who elects to enlist (buy the ticket-take the ride) and the Drill SGT who is SUPPOSED to be the Unrelenting-Uncompromising symbol of Excellence. It shouldnt be put on FB for kicks, or to impress your fucking homies.

Fear And Loathing in Kandahar II

If you ever have the chance to Deploy with a Cav Unit..Pass. I havent written anything..period in awhile. Between being sick, sick and tired, and busy theres just no time.
I like to think that the Army in itself has evolved since say..Vietnam. But I find with increasing measure that you dont have to be Very bright to be in Some MOS's. This shouldnt come as a shock, MP's are not the brightest by any stretch but the Unit we are attached to; the "Troop" or rather 'Gang' of Degenerates we live with cause me more disdain than any long patrol, or never ending guard shift. The Soldiers themselves arent so bad but the leadership..My god the leadership..I digress. We live in the company of a pack of Wild dogs. Some of which we've adopted as our own. They go out on patrol with us and well its just plain nice to have the companionship of a dog, especially ones here that are starved for attention and well..just plain starved.
They have existed peacefully here since the Cav took over the Camp. No issues.
Now..they want to shoot them and bury them in the Hesco walls surrounding our camp for "Health reasons". Nevermind that thte dogs dont actually come inside the compound, save for one small puppy "Bear". Bear was adopted by the Troop 1sg until he decided to relieve itself on 1sg's door. Now its a "Health issue". The only "Health Issue" ive noticed here at PSS-8 is the lack of cleanliness in the Kitchen that gives us all a nuice healthy dose of the shits every couple of weeks (please continue to send canned goods and noodle bowls) Or the fact that none of the CAV Soldiers shower.....Ever. Lest we not forget the Chow tent that has Mice that crawl across the serving table behind the Mermites. Ive named one Tim. These are the only "Helth Reasons" Ive noticed. But who the fuck am I right?
These Shitstains that we live next to are the same breed as the Marines who toss puppies off of cliffs for kicks, or shoot animals in the street for kicks. "Hey look at me im tough", "Hey ill just play the cliche to a T". This is why soldiers get a fucking bad rap.
Again im not sure the direction of this rant, all I can say is this; I would beat a worthless human shitstain to a pulp before I would shoot an innocent Dog, cat etc... I got it, some will say Im overreacting. Well Fuck you. Dont read.

Thanksgiving.

Once again this year, being away again you realize you are thankful for more and more. First and foremost Im thankful for having the Wife and dauhgter that I have. My wife who loves and supports me despite the fact Ive been less than stellar. My daughter who doesnt quite understand why I have to go away for long periods of time, but who will hopefully realize years from now its so she and the rest of the kids in the Hurtt clan gro up safe and dont ever have to see what I see.
Im grateful for King Floyd holding down my spot on the couch at Castle Hurtt.
As always I am grateful for the Music that enriches my life From Cannibal Corpse to Miles davis and ALL in between. Especially the 100 or so hours of Led Zeppelin I just got from a buddy...I needed it.
I cannot in good name mention Music without mentioning how thankful I am for my closest friends in the same breath. Joe, Kyle, Lamar, Alexander and Gio. The love of extreme music brought me to knowing them and having the time of our lives. I miss it.
I'm thankful for my family which supports me everytime I get on the ramp to leave, Mom, Dad, Sara The Hurtt family In South Carolina and the Pedersen family in Minnesota..God I miss you guys.
Im Especially thankful for being deployed with the best platoon in the 58th. 3rd platoon. Un-damn-touchable. Noone has worked harder, NO ONE. I cant wait for the day we're all reunited and we get on the plane to leave.
Im eternally thankful that i met an old friend- SSG Martinez, an Outlaw. In the 5 minutes that we talked- years of memories came flooding back, it was Awesome. It was by no coincidence that 4 former Outlaws were in country at the same time all these years later. Im thankful for the wealth of friends Im graced with and the goodtimes we've had.
Im STILL and eternally thankful for the laying of hands on the right guitar, played throught the right amp will change your life. Marshall, Fender, Gibson, Jackson, you name it I love em.
Thankful for the gift of perseverence, All I will say on that.
Eternally thankful that I can still deploy and fight for my country with my Mind and Body (although both have a few dings)

..Im speechless right now because i dont know how on earth I missed this. Joe Frazier Passed away last month. The Mighty Left Hook...One of the FEW men ever to catch Muhamed Ali in the ring, not only did he catch him he ran over him. If you have never seen Joe Frazier fight all you need to do is watch one of his three war's with Ali (Preferably Ali- Frazier III- 'Thrilla in Manilla") Frazier never not once backed down from Ali- the fight got so bad Frazier's trainer Eddie Futch had to stop it in the 14th round- something for which Joe never forgave him.
.. For all of Ali's shit talk during the 70's Joe Frazier supported Ali during his Disbarrment from the title, provided money for his family while he couldnt fight and praised him in public. Joe Frazier mastered the art of the left hook as seen in his first bout with Ali. Ali later said that his final fight with Joe "was the closest he'd ever came to death'
.. Joe dedicated the latter part of his life training fighters in Philadelphia PA, He is the TRUE peoples Champion. Right now the Heavyweight division could use a few Joe Frazier's. Its a damn shame..
.. Nothing else to say, Joe Frazier- one of the all time greatest Heavyweight Champions.

The rain is coming in droves (Can it do that?) I bore witness once to what heavy rain can do to this country. That was the Savage year of our lord 2005. Its Cold- the Kind that doesn't let up, coupled with the rain its just as bad as the heat during the summer. This is no vacation thats for sure, but thats Obvious. My nerves are Raw. It hasnt been hard the past few months, by all means the polar opposite. We just make things hard on ourselves. Ive harped on this before- ill leave it alone for fear of being repetitive.
I miss My girls, I miss My home, My garage, My Sanctuary. I miss King Floyd.
I miss Hendrix, The Stones, Clapton and Robin Trower LOUD while I barbecue. I miss the same things that every other person here misses I suppose but this is my note..So I miss it more.
I miss taking Shae to the guitar shop, Imparting the 'true Knowledges' of the guitar upon her. (to borrow from the parlance of our time) Hoping she will one day feel the Magic, the Power and the Glory (if you will) of learning your first song, learning those impossible chords, stringing together that first scale. Now im daydreaming.
We'll get there....
The time away, the distance, the Angst- the helplessness. Its an awful Goddamn price to pay. The Military is one King Hell (HST) Master to serve. " It is a mistress that you will fall in love with when you are young, but will leave you high and dry for a younger man the minute you cannot serve her faithfully". Im not sure where I heard that before but its a close approximation to the Original.
I miss cuddling on the couch with my Baby, falling asleep to whatever HORRIBLE movie we chose to watch. I took those nights for granted and I want them back dearly.

After 9 months of being close quarters to those you work and sweat with- Anonymity is a luxury. One I like to indulge. A place like KAF's boardwalk would seem like an unlikely spot but its easier than you think.I picked acertain spot on accident and well it became MY spot for close to four days. I would drink Coffee..real coffee, not Army coffee out of a box. And watch people. Lots of 82nd, lots of 10th Mountain. Contractors, Navy, Air Force.
Watched a soldier doing PT around the boardwalk track lunging and power wallking with his Body Armor and weapon. Nice. You'd love my Job. Ate dinner with my compadres at a restaurant that will remain nameless but whose name comes between thursday and saturday.. Anyway, we were enjoying our meal when behind us a trio of females who have obviously been watching the war on TV from KAF complained loudly about the quality of food and lack of service. Really? This is the first time in 9 months ive had HOT consecutive showers. I shat in a real toilet today.
But these three found room to complain. Well Fuck them. Try the MRE Diet. Works wonders.
Where were we?...Boardwalk..KAF....Coffee..Check.
Saw some old Friends. Sometimes its the best thing in the world- other times I feel like if I see someone Ive known a long time I might just scream. It's hard when youve treaded water for so damn long and you see the people who have made things work for them. Cant blame them, but you can see the question marks in their eyes..certain smells, sounds and sights bring memories flooding back.If you can time it right, listening to 'Stairway to heaven' just as the sun comes down behind the boardwalk with a nice breeze flowing is magic. The amount of Money that flows through this place is staggering..Bootleg movies, Kabob shops, Tobacco, Energy drinks, rugs, Ice cream. Contractors, at least upward of a hundred different groups covering everything from the gym, the Chow halls, training..etc. KBR is no longer the big daddy here. Civilians run the place. They know it. It's all part of the Conglomeration of the Military- not Just the Army. When in Doubt- Contract out.I dont want to be here any longer than I have to. Too many memories, too many current opinions. Too many assholes- I got Hook armed by an NCO who reminded me to put on my Eyepro. KAF has no regulations regarding Wearing Eyepro. This is what happens when you combine rank and too much time.
If you find yourself here. Enjoy. My guess is within 5 years regardless of The U.S leaving this country Kandahar Airfield will remain a fixture. A Hardship duty station in the same vein as Korea. Dont believe me? Check out the barracks being built on the farside of the base. Have fun with that. Dont know where to go with this so ill close.We're so politically correct nowadays that Alcohol and fornication is a No-no, so we'll just take your money any other way we can. And here we are once again. Leave was fantastic. Getting to see the family was more of a stress reliever than i'd hoped. Aside from being a cheap drunk, driving like a lunatic (A jeep wrangler is NOT an MATV BTW..) all went well. King Floyd is Fat as can be. Shitty weather aside I couldnt have asked for more.
Kuwait is a trip..another Money Pit. Although they have streamlined the going home process more so than the last time I was there.

For the most part everyone I met while in transit was genuinely thankful for what we do as Soldiers. But there were the looks...That wondering.."Is HE going to lose it?" Got me good this time yessir....
I guess I come across as arrogant or Quote Better than everyone else un-quote. Damn that. I simply know where my truth lies.
The older I get the more the 'Grey Area' in life gets reserved for fewer and fewer....
This isnt based of some pompous theory, just what Ive seen with thine own eyes. At worst im cynical beyond my years but again- i'm simply a product of my environment. FURTHERMORE this insubordination will not be tolerated. Therse are desperate times. I find myself with no permanent home in this Ugly place. Do you know what that can do to a man? Ive resorted to vagrancy..sleeping underneath trucks..hiding under the boardwalk in plain sight. It doesnt help with the vast quantities of coffee Ive consumed since my return. Enough on this. I'm absolutely at a loss of words. Its hard to compose this but I will. There was a 17 year old kid that I know that fell in love with the Guitar and playing Heavy Music. He sought out a sound that he heard inthe speakers and in his head and saved his birthday money from his 18th Birthday. Despite the fact he was leaving for Basic training in less than 2 months the opportunity was there. Done and Done. He didnt speed home from Waldorf that day because he looked in the backseat and knew it was there. MARSHALL.
There are PLENTY of imitators out there- you can walk into any Guitar shop in the world (Believe me Ive been to most of 'em) and you'll here "well it sounds like a Marshall" or "its Kinda like a Marshall". Not in a million years. Once you've stood in front of a Marshall JCM-800 full stack and Dimed it (put the volume to 10) hit an A chord and felt it M-O-V-E you. It permeates you, it alters you- you never go Back. Its Clapton, Hendrix, Randy Rhodes. It's Zakk Wylde, Kerry King, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen. It is what guitarists who endorse "other" brands put behind dummy cabs to STILL GET THAT SOUND...
I also know a guy who got back from his first deployment to Afghanistan and Bought a Marshall JCM-800 Halfstack instead of a brand new car..That guy is 30 now. Has a wife and a daughter doesnt have as much time to play as he used to and I can personally vouch for him and say with certainty he doesnt regret that decision for ONE MINUTE.
I am not a famous musician, nor will I ever be. But when you have a Marshall amp Behind you- you have 60 years of experience behind you. Its like being able to play with the 95' Bulls or the 74' Pittsburgh steelers if not only for a moment. You're a part of history and you have the chance to MAKE history- It inspires you. If you're a fan of Guitar hero or Rockband- put down the controller, save your bucks and take the ride. You wont regret it.
In closing, If you want to play Heavy Music- shit, any guitar oriented music. You will not go wrong with Marshall.. Until then I remain,

There is no grand revelation

It wont come and probably never will. You've been written off and tossed to the wayside so many times its ....
You're older, smarter, weathered. Use it. Nothing is going to change, just endure and fight back.
Endure.
Its right there with you and it has been since forever. You made the decision long ago and now you have to honor it. Now is not the time to rollover and die. Your epitaph has been re-written countless times and youve built the kingdom from which you stand from the shattered stone. You'll endure because thats what you do.You cant change the world but that does NOT mean it has to change you. One more go. Stand your ground.
